THE VINEYARD
In 1997, Ann and Keith Wightwick established the Wightwick estate vineyard in the Ballarat region.

THE WINEMAKING PROCESS
Winemaker and son, Simon Wightwick, is an avid believer that the best wines are made from the best vineyards – which is why Simon and his parents carefully tend to the vineyard each year, hand pruning, thinning and picking the fruit to ensure maximum quality.
At harvest time, family and friends gather to harvest the grapes, along with Simon’s kelpies Bruce and Fox who are well versed in the art of making wine.

THE WINEMAKER
With a background in sculpture and fine arts, Simon studied winemaking at Charles Sturt University. Today, Simon is part of a network of innovative young winemakers who regularly share ideas and knowledge, and who encourage each other to think outside the square.
Simon has an appreciation for traditional winemaking practices, which in the end is about making wine simply and naturally.  Simon’s approach to winemaking reflects this philosophy - Wightwick wines are not fined or filtered, and are transferred using gravity rather than pumps. The aim is to make wines that have the ability to, and that improve with, age.

THE CELLAR
Shortly after the vineyard was planted, Keith and Simon built an underground wine cellar from old red gum sleepers – reminiscent of the historic gold mining shafts in the Ballarat region.
The underground cellar was built to facilitate the ageing of the wine and to ensure that the wine produced from the Wightwick vineyard is released to the market with some bottle age
